The Hogan assessments consist of the Hogan Personality Inventory (HPI), the Hogan Developmental Survey (HDS), the Motives, Values and Preferences Inventory (MVPI). These assessments can be used in combination or separately under each of the Hogan Lead, Hogan Select and Hogan Develop report categories.

HOGAN PERSONALITY INVENTORY (HPI)

The HPI is an exceptional assessment that assists in predicting employee job performance and for helping companies reduce turnover, absenteeism, shrinkage, and poor customer service. It was developed specifically for the business community.

ASSESSMENT Scales

The HPI contains 7 primary scales namely:

ADJUSTMENT: Self-confidence, self-esteem, and composure under pressure

AMBITION: Initiative, competitiveness, and desire for leadership roles

SOCIABILITY: Extraversion, gregariousness, and a need for social interaction

INTERPERSONAL SENSITIVITY: Warmth, charm, and the ability to maintain relationships

PRUDENCE: Self-discipline, responsibility, and conscientiousness

INQUISITIVE: Imagination, curiosity, vision and creative potential

LEARNING APPROACH: Enjoys learning, staying current on business and technical matters

HOGAN DEVELOPMENTAL SURVEY (HDS)

Purpose To evaluate behavioural tendencies that impedes success in the work place

The HDS is particularly useful in providing professionals with information on risk factors or indicators of potential behavioural problems on the job. The HDS can also be used to determine behavioural tendencies that could impede success in the workplace.

ASSESSMENT Scales

The following are the 11 scales with a brief description of the tendencies associated with higher scores:

EXCITABLE: Moody, easily annoyed, hard to please, emotionally volatile

DILIGENT: Perfectionistic, hard to please, micromanaging

BOLD: Overly self-confident, arrogant, with inflated feelings of self-worth

RESERVED: Aloof, indifferent to feelings of others, uncommunicative

SCEPTICAL: Distrustful, cynical, sensitive to criticism, focused on the negative

COLOURFUL: Dramatic, attention-seeking, interruptive, poor listening skills

MISCHIEVOUS: Charming, risk-taking, limit-testing, excitement-seeking

CAUTIOUS: Unassertive, resistant to change, risk averse, slow to make decisions

LEISURELY: Overtly cooperative, but privately irritable, stubborn, uncooperative

IMAGINATIVE: Creative, but thinking and acting in unusual or eccentric ways

DUTIFUL: Eager to please and reluctant to act independently or against popular opinion

MOTIVES, VALUES AND PREFERENCES INVENTORY (MVPI)

ASSESSMENT Scales

The inventory contains the following 10 scales:

RECOGNITION: Wanting to be known, recognised, and appreciated

POWER: Wanting to be in control, to succeed, and create a legacy

HEDONISM: Wanting fun, variety, excitement, and pleasure

ALTRUISTIC: Wanting to help, serve, and encourage others

AFFILIATION: Wanting frequent and varied social contact

TRADITION: Believing in personal customs, duty, hard work, and respect for authority

SECURITY: Need for predictability, structure and order

COMMERCE: Interest in money, profits, investment, and business opportunities

AESTHETICS: Need for self-expression, wanting to infuse quality into the look, feel and design of work products

SCIENCE: Enjoys research, interested in technology, and prefers data based decisions

REPORT OPTIONS

The HoganSelect, HoganDevelop and HoganLead series of reports represent an integrated system of solutions that are specifically designed to help organisations to better manage their human resource capital and retain top talent. The HoganSelect range of reports helps clients make informed hiring decisions.

The following reports are available in the HoganSelect range:

  • THE FIT REPORT: This report provides a graphic display of scale performance, cut score performance and a hiring recommendation.
  • THE EXPRESS REPORT: This off-the-shelf report provides an immediate recommendation based on a candidate’s scores on seven dimensions that influence occupational success within seven job categories.
  • THE ADVANTAGE REPORT: The report offers an off-the-shelf hiring solution with immediate implementation capabilities. This report focuses on good organizational citizen, the degree to which a person seems calm, even-tempered and their ability to provide good customer service.
  • BASIS REPORT: This report option combines psychological assessment with behavioural interviewing to evaluate the employment potential of job candidates.
  • LEADER BASIS: This report combines information from the HPI, HDS and MVPI and provides an indication of Employment Fit, Job Fit, Job Risks, Organization Fit, Candidate Fit Recommendation, and Candidate Interview Style. The Candidate Interview Style can be used to guide structured interviewing based on the candidate’s assessment results.
  • SALES BASIS: This report includes information from the HPI and MVPI and describes Job Fit, Employment Fit, Candidate Strengths and areas of concern, plus overall candidate recommendation. The Candidate Interview Style can be used to guide structured interviewing based on the candidate’s assessment results.

The HoganLead Reports are composed of five different reports all working together to identify strengths and developmental needs of a manager or executive. The HoganLead range of reports helps to take leadership to the next level.

The following reports are available in the HoganLead range:

  • THE POTENTIAL REPORT: Based on the HPI, it outlines an individual's day-to-day leadership style, including behavioural descriptions, leadership competencies, and comprehensive development recommendations.
  • THE CHALLENGE REPORT: Based on the HDS, it describes a leader’s characteristic way of interpreting the world and treating subordinates while under stress and pressure.
  • THE VALUES REPORT:Based on the MVPI, it explores a person's core values and goals that ultimately drive a leader’s behaviour, aspirations and expectations about life.
  • THE COACHING REPORT: a self-guided, comprehensive development planning tool for individual leadership development. The Coaching Report integrates the information from the Potential, Challenge, and Values reports into a five-step planning process.
  • THE SUMMARY REPORT: a results-based overview of a candidate’s performance strengths, challenges, and values. The report integrates results across the HPI, HDS, and MVPI to provide a snapshot of interpersonal performance and values in relation to future career aspirations.

The HoganDevelop range of reports helps practitioners to grow key talent. The following reports are available in the HoganDevelop range:

  • THE CAREER REPORT: This report describes how an individual will act in various business circumstances, identifies strengths and shortcomings, and includes detailed developmental tips on how to manage his/her career.
  • THE MANAGE REPORT: The report highlights the most effective techniques for managing an employee. This in-depth report identifies strengths on which to build and shortcomings that may be a challenge.
  • THE COMPASS REPORT: This report outlines the occupational significance of a person's core values and provides effective career planning information.
  • THE INTERPRET REPORTS FOR THE HPI, HDS AND MVPI: These reports present scores in a graphical representation they interpret the business relevance of the scores, and describe how the scores interact.
  • INTERPRETIVE REPORT WITH OCCUPATIONAL SCALES: This report includes interpretation plus Occupational scales.
  • EXECUTIVE DEVELOPMENT REPORT: is a customized report that is scored from the HPI and compares the person to an executive group.
  • MANAGEMENT DEVELOPMENT: This report is scored from the HPI and compares the person to a manager group.
  • FLASH REPORT: This is a two-page report that graphically displays HPI, HDS, and MVPI scale scores and provides raw data for HPI and MVPI subscales. The report is designed for use by a coach or user with expertise to interpret based on numbers alone.

  • THE SAFETY REPORT: This report provides a graphic summary and interpretation of a candidate’s safety-related behaviour.
  • THE HIGH POTENTIAL REPORT: This report aligns with business competencies to provide quality information for selection decisions, on-boarding, and employee development. This easy-to-implement solution is a cost effective way to predict high potentials for your organization.
  • THE DATA REPORT: This report provides numerical scores for the primary scales on each of the HPI, HDS, MVPI and HBRI scales.
  • HIGH POTENTIAL REPORT: This report aligns with business competencies to provide information for selection decisions, on-boarding and employee development.
  • HOGAN TEAM REPORT: This report provides information on team functioning at its best and worst. The use of this report requires additional certification training.

South African RESEARCH

South African norms are available for the HPI, HDS, and MVPI using candidates from the corporate environment in South Africa. The psychometric properties of the instruments have been investigated and numerous local criterion-referenced studies have been completed.
